Holy Trinity

“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” —Dr. Seuss.

English is the key to unlock a love of learning. Fluency in reading is essential to understanding in any subject and therefore, at Holy Trinity, we focus on ensuring that children learn to read confidently, both in terms of decoding the words and determining their meaning. They are exposed to a range of quality texts through whole-class reading and access to a well-stocked library. Speaking and listening is embedded in all English lessons whether in the form of class discussion, drama re-enactment, debate, performance or peer discussion, as developing a high standard of oral literacy is also very important for the development of a child’s self-esteem. Children are taught to write fluently for a range of purposes, learning how to structure sentences, practise the rules of grammar and consistently expand their vocabulary. They are given time both to write freely and write based on prior practise of the specific skills required for a particular writing form. Writing in a cursive hand encourages the children to take pride in the presentation of their work.
